Latest Fuerteventura Coronavirus Situation

As at 14th March 2022:

Fuerteventura was on the UK’s Amber List (now done away with I understand).

It seems that from 1st December only those that have a vaccination certificate are permitted to travel to Spain. Do they not look at the statistics which clearly show that you can catch and spread the virus equally whether you are vaccinated or not? The vaccination clearly does not work but they will never admit they are wrong. Total discrimination of those who don’t want to be vaccinated.

1667 is the highest number of active infections so far.

Is Fuerteventura on lockdown?

Because of the low case numbers Fuerteventura is not on lockdown at the moment – but I am sure they are just dying to flex their muscles and bring a lockdown back.

Not updated so check yourself! Visitors can come here on holiday but currently need a valid negative PCR test that is less than 72 hours old (since the test was taken) or a vaccine certificate.

Masks must be worn indoors in public places (including hotel public areas) but no longer need to be worn outside where antisocial distancing can be maintained.

History of the lockdown

Unfortunately, the Canary Islands government has put all of the Canary Islands on lockdown with effect from midnight last night (14th/15th March) due to the Coronavirus hysteria. This is 24 hours ahead of the Spanish government’s plans to lockdown the whole of Spain.

We were then notified that this was being extended by a further 2 weeks to 24th April.

Today, 30/3/2020 the President of the Canary Islands has announced that this is being further extended to cover the whole of April. News report – Confinement for the whole month of April will be essential.

What does this lockdown mean?

There are lots of different restrictions in place now but the most important ones are:

  • All bars and restaurants are closed
  • Citizens may only go to work, the supermarket, the pharmacy, the bank or to care for relatives.
  • People are only allowed to travel alone
  • All schools are closed
  • Festivals, parades etc are cancelled
  • All sporting events cancelled
  • Dog walking can continue but dogs must me on a lead and they should be short walks (sorry Oscar and Jenson) – now reduced to just 50m from the house!
  • Employers should allow employees to work from home where possible
  • You should stay at least 1 metre away from others

Of course, some of this is sensible, particularly cancelling things where groups of people will congregate together. However, there are a few stupid exceptions. An example is that church services can still go ahead, as long as everyone stays 1 metre apart. Now I know there is no greater Atheist than me but surely even religious people can see that a church service is not an essential gathering so they should also be banned.

I have heard that some food shops are only allowing one person in at a time to stop people coming into contact with each other to try and stop the spread of the virus. But that means people are queuing up outside – in other words congregating together. Doh!

Tourists

Tourists that are currently here are being confined to their hotels. Rather stupid in some instances as I know a couple staying in the RIU hotel on the Corralejo dunes beach hotel at the moment. The advice is to stay at least 1m away from other people but everyone is crammed around the pool. The pool overlooks the empty beach where everyone could spread out and stay away from each other.

Flights

Jet2 has cancelled all flights, at least for people coming to Fuerteventura. They are flying empty aircraft here to fly people back to the UK. Other airlines are also cancelling flights.

It seems repatriation flights will be arranged to take people back to their home countries.

We know two people who live here that are now stuck in the UK and can’t get back. Update: The last of the two has just arrived back and she was the only passenger coming this way on an Easyjet flight from Bristol.

Update on getting prescriptions

Special measures update. Prescriptions can be ordered over phone and medication picked from chemist up with just health card: Due to the declared pandemic of coronavirus COVID-19. The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, will put in place from Wednesday, March 18, measures to prevent the unnecessary movement of patients to health centers, facilitating obtaining prescriptions without having to go to the clinic.

The objective is allow patients to be attended by their doctor by telephone (requesting an appointment through 012 or using the Canary Health Service app), subsequently enabling their pharmacy to dispense medication without the need to present paper prescriptions, which until now was required.

The patient must present their original Individual Health Card (TSI) at the pharmacy. Patients will be able to obtain an instruction sheet in pharmacies, as an exceptional measure, in case they do not have a health card.

With this measure, it is hoped to reduce attendance at health centers and thus avoid possible crowds and the spread of the virus.

Info here – Health enables the Health Card as the only requirement for dispensing medication in pharmacies

Thanks JP for the information on your site, due to fly to fuerteventura on Tuesday the 17th for a week, cannot get through to travel company or airline for updates.
Your site is the only place I could find with current info.
My holiday will be cancelled either by me or travel company.
At least Spanish authorities are sending out clear instructions re lockdown ,Boris advices to wash out hands and sing happy birthday.
Keep up the good work. James.

Even if you could get here it would be no holiday so better off at home James. Hopefully the situation will be resolved soon.

James, your first source of information should be UK Gov site https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/spain It advices against all travel but essential travel to Spain. If you do manage to get here, your travel insurance will be invalid as travelling is against UK Gov advice.
If you booked through a travel agent, you’ll need to contact them.
If you booked through easyjet, all flights to Spain are cancelled until 29th March as per https://www.easyjet.com/en/policy/coronavirus

Thanks. I was due to come out on Tuesday, but resigned on Friday that the holiday flight would be cancelled when I heard about the lockdown. Some relief on Saturday when Jet2 cancelled all flights to Spain. We did have private accommodation but it would not have been ideal in a lockdown/ state of emergency. Hopefully we will be back soon.

    Hey JP,

Love the videos – especially the wit. I’ve been coming to Fuerte for years, have taken a few tips on where to go.

I have flights with Jet 2 and an Air BnB villa booked for April 22-29. Do you think it likely that the island will be opened up again by then. I think you said at the start that it’s for an initial 2 weeks?

    Cheers

    Andrew

    1. JP in Fuerteventura avatar
      JP in Fuerteventura

It is initially for 15 days. I don’t think anyone can say at this stage Andrew. We just have to wait and see.

Can I drive my friends to the airport and are buses and taxis running?

    1. JP in Fuerteventura avatar
      JP in Fuerteventura

I have seen a number of posts where people have asked the authorities this and they have all been told yes. Buses are running (one just went past my house) but I don’t know about taxis.

Hi JP, thank you so much for the post! I have to say if it wasn’t for your posts rules of the lockdown would remain a mystery. Just now (16/03/2020 10:48am) my hubby and I were debating on going to Mercadona, ie both of us. There is no clear stipulation on how many people from a household are allowed to “venture” out.

There was no clear notification from anyone to tell us detail on the lockdown and how it works.

Still the only clear thing was the fine for the breach ranging from EUR100 to 600,000.00

    Funny really!

    Still thanks for everything! 🙂

    Hi JP,

As a church, the Fuerteventura Chaplaincy decided NOT to proceed with services. Sticking to the 1m apart rule would have been pretty difficult.

We are now doing virtual services over YouTube. See http://www.fuertechurch.org or search Fuertechurch channel on YouTube.

We are continuing to care for elderly housebound ex-pats and also continuing our collection of food items for the poor and homeless on the island.

    John,
Thank you for all the information.
    Current in Campanella.
Due to fly out on 21/3/2000 with easyjet which has now been cancelled.
Stuck until the end of the month if we are fortunate.
Will have to look for further accommodations at the end of this week.

I suspect there will be a repatriation flight for you. Keep trying to contact the airline/s.

My understanding of most hotels and complexes is that the pools are closed. Also, all the churches I know of on the island have suspended all meetings for the time being

I would urge people to look out for each other at this time, contacting via messages or phone calls.

Are we aloud to travel from Corralejo to Caleta as we need to change our accommodation?

Thought I would add a bit more.
The Minister of Tourism says he thinks the islands will be shut to tourists for 3 months.
As of the end of Monday 16th there are currently 140 active cases of Coronavirus in the Canaries plus six others who have got over it. 73 are under 50 years and three of them are between 10 years and 19 years.
Two people have died, both women.
13 are seriously ill in intensive care.
This seems a bit different to the reports about risk groups being published in the UK
Last observation, the Police here are enforcing the restrictions stopping cars, pedestrians and cyclists with arrests and fines issued.

    1. JP in Fuerteventura avatar
      JP in Fuerteventura

I read about the 3 months without tourist bit yesterday. The island will be empty.

  13. Stratman avatar

This is what you get if you don’t obey the stay at home restrictions in Fuerteventura. He had been on a bike and didn’t comply when the police told him to stop.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p-wkGHCT1I

Actually this is the first time I have seen the Policía Local do anything other that see school children across the road or direct traffic.

I am now going to ignore everything, play a bit of guitar and stick my head in the sand.

This is my last post on any social media (some may say this is a good thing) unless I have something positive or uplifting to say.

This is because the pandemic is becoming more real to me now. For example, the brother and sister-in-law of a the partner of a good Spanish friend and who are both Spanish police officers, are now in quarantine. Her brother is not too bad but her sister-in-law is very ill. I am keeping my fingers crossed for them. This, with the latest death in the canaries, a 37 year old woman health worker in Tenerife, is starting to put things in perspective.

Last rant, I was disgusted to see the video of the behaviour of drunken Brits in the streets Benidorm who were abusing the Spanish Police, shouting out “We’ve got the virus” to these police who are putting their own lives at risk because of the increased chance of them catching the virus, whilst trying to uphold the law and help stop the spread of the disease.

One thing for JP. Did you see the regulations about walking the dog? Among other things, they say that you are only allowed to go a short distance for the comfort break of your dog and are not allowed to go kilometres from you house. This is being enforced if you are seen, but presumably out in the country this is unlikely.

    1. JP in Fuerteventura avatar
      JP in Fuerteventura

I agree about these particular Brits. As I said elsewhere, it is a shame that this virus isn’t just life-threatening to the stupid. I am only taking the boys locally for a 20 minute walk rather than the usual hour. They aren’t too impressed. I may start giving them one in the morning as well as the later afternoon but Oscar soon gets into a routine so will expect two walks a day once this all ends!

  15. Stratman avatar
    Stratman

I know I said I would only post positive things but I had to let you know this in case you haven’t seen it. New regulations for dog walking say you can only leave you house but not go for a walk. It is only for the minimum time and distance essential, up to a radius of 50 metres from your house is accepted. If you get caught you will be liable to a fine of 601 euros up to 30,000 euros. Yes, you did read that fine correctly.

  16. Stratman avatar
    Stratman

One further thing, someone asked you about how many people you can have in a car. As I can’t distribute information I thought you are better placed to do so as you have subscribers here and are also no doubt in touch via social media with many others. I only really know Spanish people here, with just one English acquaintance. Basically you can have one person per car but with a few exceptions. Also wherever you go you must have proof with you that your journey is necessary, for example you must have an appointment to take your dog to a vet, proof of appointment to go to the doctor, etc, etc. Once again, enormous fines if you don’t comply.

I’m due to come over 21st July and have resigned myself to the fact it will be cancelled. This is here for the long haul.

    1. JP in Fuerteventura avatar

You could be ok by then. They are predicting no tourists here for 3 months so you could be one of the first to return. We will have to see.

An uplifting experience here in Puerto del Rosario tonight. At 8 o’clock a large convoy of police cars, fire engines and ambulances arrived at the hospital with blue lights on and sirens blaring They drove round the roads around the hospital and finally stopped, I assume as I live behind it, in front of it still with lights and sirens going. This was to show appreciation to all hospital staff in a way that has become the norm in the peninsular. This was accompanied by people coming to their windows and balconies and applauding for several minutes. Much better than the whingeing which seems to be coming from the UK at the moment.

I have heard that plumbers are considered an essential service. Have you tried contacting any? Do you own the apartment? If not, then it will be the landlord’s responsibility. Many ferretarias are open too so you might eb able to buy a new one and replace it yourself as it is not a difficult job.

Brilliant site – so pleased I’ve found it. What’s the current situation in Fuerteventura?

    1. JP in Fuerteventura avatar
      JP in Fuerteventura

I have updated this post. Basically there are now 39 active cases. 36 are illegal immigrants held in quarantine in the port, 2 are new Guardia Civil recruits from the mainland and the other is a health worker.

Hello JP and new friends, just wish to mention, that insurefor.com will insure you to travel to the canaries giving you full cover including corona virus, for single trip despite it going against the “advise” of the FCO i just mention it as we are coming out to our holiday home this month, and yes we will self isolate when we return to the UK for 2 weeks, but without the insurance we wouldnt have been able to travel, keep safe every one

    Morning,
We are supposed to be flying in as a family on boxing day. Can you tell me the current situation regarding lockdown/ freedom of movement. Are Shops and restaurants open?

    Thank you
    Regards
    Sara-Jane

    1. JP in Fuerteventura avatar
      JP in Fuerteventura

There is no lockdown. At the moment pretty much everywhere that feels it is worth their while opening is open. You have to wear masks when walking about in towns, in shops, around hotels (except when eating, drinking or sunbathing), and even (officially) on a beach unless sitting/lying down or swimming, although in my experience many people are (sensibly) ignoring that on many out of the way beaches. Obviously you are aware that you all need to have a negative PCR test timed within 72 hours of arrival, irrespective of age.

We were coming boxing day too staying at Hotel Barcelo Fuerterventura Thalasso Spa but obviously still closed having been there 7 times would have loved to come is everything open is Costa Caletta then bars etc

          JP in Fuerteventura

There are quite a number of places open in Caleta but overall I would say it is much quieter there than in Corralejo as more people live in Corralejo year round.

Hi we are due to fly out on the 19th December for two weeks, but have now been told we will have to self isolate once back in the UK, we are staying in Corralejo, where we have been many times, do you know if everything is open and do you have any up to date figures on infections over there.
    Many thanks for your help
    Regards

    Barbara

    1. JP in Fuerteventura avatar
      JP in Fuerteventura

Hi Barbara. The figures on this page are completely up to date. I update them daily from the official Fuerteventura bulletin. So as of now there are only 40 cases here in Fuerteventura. Many bars and restaurants are open in Corralejo, although some of the bigger “touristy” ones haven’t reopened yet. Fortunately, as Corralejo has a fairly large resident population, it is worth most to stay open. Thank you very much for the coffee!

I am trying to get confirmation that Wednesday’s change to the rules has been reversed. It is hard to keep up with all the stupid regulations at the moment.
