Spanish Builders – What are they like?

Spanish builders
Our bathroom floor which was only 2-3cm thick

We bought our house here in 2013 and since then it has been a constant round of maintenance thanks to the Spanish builders. We lived in our two previous houses in the UK for 17 years and in that time I didn’t need to do as much as I have done on this house in just over 3 years.

This is a house tour video but not as you might expect. It is rather a tour of the problems you may encounter if you buy a Spanish property when becoming an expat in Fuerteventura.

There may be some good Spanish builders but whoever built our house is not one of them! Mind you, the English builder we used for the changes we made to the house told me plenty of horror stories about the bad workmanship he finds all the time in other properties so he wasn’t alone. When you are buying a property in Spain you have to be aware of things like this.

House Remodel – Before, During and After

House Remodel

House Remodel – Finished at last!

I produced a video to show the before and after of our house remodel from photos and videos taking during the process.

When we bought this house we did so knowing that we needed to do some fairly major upgrades. To start we installed patio doors to the swimming pool area, built a garage (my workshop) then completely gutted and refitted the main bathroom.

Then the biggy started – the kitchen!

This not only meant fitting upgraded kitchen units but also extending the kitchen by knocking down a wall into what was a passageway, making it open plan and much larger. Strangely, this house is a one of number in the immediate area which was designed with two front doors so we decided to get rid of one and use that space for for more units. We also had a shower room which accessed from the passageway so we re-jigged the bedrooms a bit so we could refurbish it and make it an en-suite to the main bedroom.

Thank goodness it is finished as I have lots of other things I want to get on with and summer is here now too!

Gardeners World from Fuerteventura – Garden Tour

As a lifelong viewer of the BBC Gardeners World tv programme right from the late 70s to the present day I thought I would do a little “spoof” copy using the best of the themes used for the programme in the 1980s with the opening titles in the style of the day. This was in the days of my favourite tv gardener, Geoffrey Smith, gardening at Clack’s Farm , the end of Percy Thrower also the start of Geoff Hamilton’s hosting era from Barnsdale.

Fuerteventura is on a similar latitude to Florida and Arizona. In fact, gardening here is very similar to gardening in the Arizona Desert. We have very long, hot, dry summers and warm winters. There is little soil and rain only falls during a few months of the winter. Our garden is rather unusual for here as it has a number of trees. Trees are unfortunately not very common on this island.

Plants like Bougainvillea, Yucca, Agave, Canarian Date Palms and all forms of succulent thrive here. Although you can grow things like roses here they are hard work and frankly you are better gardening with the climate rather than fighting it.

I will add some more videos as I make progress around the garden.

Workshop Tour and Clean Up

Workshop Tour and Clean Up

A quick workshop tour and clean up before I start to fully reorganise and rearrange it. I will do another shop tour once I have finished. I have been wanting to get started on this for many months.

As we have been remodelling the house, the workshop became a dumping ground for kitchen cabinets, doors and appliances, as well as drywall and anything else that needed to be kept dry in case it rained. Consequently it became almost impossible to move in there. Now the kitchen is finished I can get cracking with clearing up and reorganising.

I really need some additional workshop tools, particularly a band saw and a better drill press. I have never seen a band saw for sale here in Fuerteventura and only one drill press, and that was a cheap piece of Chinese rubbish. If I was still living in the UK I could easily buy good, cheap, second-hand examples on Ebay but unfortunately that isn’t possible here.

How to Clean A Swimming Pool

Cleaning a swimming pool

How I clean mine

If you have bought a house and want to know how to clean a swimming pool then I hope this video helps.

The house we bought here in Fuerteventura has a swimming pool – well frankly we would not have bought one without, or without the ability to add one, as life would be less pleasant here without one.

Therefore I had never had to maintain one before, the closest being looking after our hot tub in the UK. After some trial and error, and asking the advice of a few friends with pools, I developed a routine which seems to work well. From start to finish usually takes me about 45 minutes.

I quite enjoy cleaning the pool. It is quite therapeutic on a nice warm day and satisfying when it is gleaming.

In this video, I deliberately left the pool to get dirtier than I normally would so that you could more easily see the difference.

Probably the hardest thing is not the actual cleaning but maintaining the correct chemicals balance. Mind you, having said that, I think some people get way to hung up about this as it isn’t quite a crucial as you may think.
